Le feeling au départ / That feeling on the start line

Ça y est, je suis au CEGEP de Rouyn-Noranda et j’arrive à la centrale du Tour de l’Abitibi. Première étape, l’accréditation, ce qui me permettra ensuite de circuler librement dans la centrale. Aussi au cœur de l’accréditation : recevoir la carte-repas qui donne accès à la cafétéria. Il s’agit de la clé pour garder les bénévoles qui passent la semaine ici heureux. Bon, le pub VIP aussi, mais ça c’est une autre histoire… On rencontre les bénévoles, on revoit déjà des visages connus, comme Sylvain Richard qui arrive les mains pleines pour installer son bureau temporaire en vue de la production des résultats officiels. Je reçois aussi mon guide technique. J’en connais déjà le contenu puisque je fais partie du comité que le rédige! Notre local de direction technique est verrouillé, un appel téléphonique et un instant plus tard, la porte m’est ouverte. J’installe tranquillement mes trucs. Je croise déjà des cyclistes qui se lèvent et vont déjeuner. Je sens vraiment que l’ambiance du Tour m’imprègne. J’entends parler arabe au détour d’un corridor. C’est aussi ça qu’apporte le Tour : des contacts avec des gens de partout dans le monde.

Bientôt, le stationnement se remplira de voitures d’équipes. Certains coureurs iront se délier les jambes. Les bénévoles se feront plus nombreux. C’est étrange comme c’est silencieux pour l’instant, comme si tout le monde attendait le signal de départ de la première course pour vraiment s’énerver.

Ce soir, ce sera la présentation des équipes et le challenge sprint Abitibi, un hors-d’œuvre avant le grand départ. Parlant de hors-d’œuvre, il y aura aussi le cocktail d’ouverture! On risque d’être un peu feeling avant le départ!

Here I am at the CEGEP of Rouyn-Noranda, the Tour de l’Abitibi headquarters. First stop, getting the credentials to access freely the headquarters. Along with that, getting the most important card for week-long volunteers: the meal card. That’s what keeps us happy. The VIP pub also keeps us happy, but that is another story… I meet other volunteers and known faces, like Sylvain Richard who walks in hands full of material for his temporary office to produce official results. I also receive the technical guide. I kind of know what is in there since I am part of the group that produces it! Our technical direction room is locked. A quick phone call and the door opens. I take my stuff out and lay it on a desk. I come across riders getting up and getting breakfast. I can feel the Tour’s mood getting into me. I can also hear people speak Arabic in a hallway. This is also part of the Tour’s attraction: getting to meet people from all over the world.

Soon, the parking lot will be filled with team cars. Riders will go out to spin their legs. Volunteers will come in. For now, it’s still strangely silent, as if everybody was lying low in anticipation of the first stage before getting excited.

Tonight, we will witness the team presentation and the Challenge Sprint Abitibi, an appetizer before the real racing begins. Speaking of appetizers, I will also attend the opening cocktail. I might get a feeling before the start!
